I was going to go into that, but I was waiting until he answered the question above. If the gear position indicator flashes "---" when you turn the key on, that means it has a trouble code stored. To find out which code, count the number of times it flashes.

You may have more than one problem. Because the neutral light and reverse lights are staying on, I'm thinking you may have a bad gear position switch or a bad display.

the "---" doesnt flash at all, i tired switching gears i can shift 1 direction each way, but the nuetral and reverse light doesnt change

That's odd that the "---" doesn't flash when you turn the key on. I'm thinking that you either have a bad gear position switch or a messed up display.

I would test the gear position switch. You will have to remove the plastic cover on the right side. There's a plug that you unplug under the plastic cover to test the gear position switch. Here are the procedures:
