Honda 450 Foreman
Ok guys my friend dropped his 450 foreman off at my house today for em to fix, he said he was driving it heard a pop and the rear tires quit pulling. After i watched it and moved it the rear tires roll with alot of ressistance, so basiclly will roll, slide, roll, slide and so on and will only slide for a few seconds, the tires roll, but when trying to push they are very hard to push. Im thinking his rear brakes might be locked up cause if it was transmission it would shift gears correct? If it was the rear end gears breaking apart then wouldnt the rear wheels spin freely, but not pull? Drive shaft would be the same correct? Give me some ideas hopefully it wont be an expensive fix.

RE: Honda 450 Foreman
Unclamp and pull back the rubber boot that covers the rear u-joint and make sure the u-joint isn't broken.

RE: Honda 450 Foreman
yeah im going to do that to just seems like the brake calipers are stuck wide open and the drum is sliding around the pads or something. What are your thoughts on it being the rear end gears or transmission?

RE: Honda 450 Foreman
I doubt it's the transmission, but it could be the rear diff gears. The lining on the brake shoes could have come off and wedged in the brake drum, too, but my guess is the diff gears or broken u-joint. The u-joint might have broke in two and it might be hung together binding it, but since I not there to look at it, it's just a guess. LOL.
If you need a factory service manual, let me know, I've got it. |

RE: Honda 450 Foreman
ok here is an update i got the boot moved back enough to look at the drive shaft, form the rear of the engine to the rear end, it looks good i cranked it up and tried to move forward to see if it moves and it spins with easily. When i try to give it gas the whole rear of the atv drops down as if you just added 400 lbs to the rear racks. so im thinking the brakes possibly which im gonna pull the drum and check those if the rear wheels spin freely with the brakes off, if it does then i could be the brakes, but im afraid it is the pinion gear in the rear end. I pulled the cap off the rear end and the large gear looked good but i need to get into it deeper and see, gonna drain rear end and see if i get metal shavings.
